Leaving a legacy and learn to evaluate your value system.

What will your legacy be? How will you be remembered after your death? All of us strive to live a life that is worthy of being considered “well lived”. We all, in our own ways, attempt to leave our “mark” upon those around us, so that we will not be forgotten. Martial artists are no different. Are they?

Actually, they may be different; they might have an “edge” when it comes to living life in way that truly leaves a legacy. It all comes down to living life as an artist. According to most dictionaries an artist is “a person whose work exhibits exceptional skill.” A martial artist strives daily to honor that definition physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Oscar Wilde

To a martial artist this is the base to everything they do. Physical reality is something to be questioned; physical limitations are something to be challenged. Martial artists are, at their cores, physical dreamers. They dream of a world of perfection, a world of peace, a world of universal health and wellbeing. This is what drives them to practice daily, monitor their diets, and improve their health. The martial artist refuses to see things as they are, they insist on pouring their artistry into making all things better.

I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination.
Albert Einstein

The development of mental strength and acuity is of the utmost importance to martial artists. However, a good martial artist also keeps in mind that intellect without imagination contains no life. Imagination and creativity are critical to the types of activities that define a martial artist. Solutions to the challenges encountered on a daily basis are overcome with ingenuity. This is how a martial artist thinks at all times, how they express themselves in life, always operating “outside of the box”.

The highest art is always the most religious, and the greatest artist is always a devout person.
Abraham Lincoln

A martial artist need not conform to any particular religion or faith, but they must be “spiritually driven”. This type person understands that living well means being devoted to a way of life that emphasizes the positive. Martial artists should be masters at drawing out the best in those around them. These are the people you see in your community focused on celebrating and nurturing all that is good in others. A martial artist is “devout” in this effort, sincere in all that they say and do. They are earnest in their pursuit of the positive in life.

Life is to be lived for the positive. Get involved in the practice of a martial art and learn what makes a martial artist special. Live like you mean it, leave a positive, lasting legacy.
